Periodic updates update things that change over time, like the onilne status of a user and whether you have mail.

We could receive XML containing the name of the DIV to be changed, and the new value. Or just variable|value .

The question is how expensive this is in terms of bandwidth. That's the same problem with rolling our own IM system since it would have to poll a few times a minute.
