Thank you for this kind welcome, and for creating this community. As you know, it always makes me happy when people start things here. But that doesn't sound very depressed, does it?

It's been a rough year for many of us, including me.

Life is a mix of success and failure, of highs and lows. In our culture it seems that people forget the highs and emphasize the lows.

Why do you think this is?

I believe that in todays society, we as a whole are
more conditioned to be more depressed than up-lifted
due the the un-stability of things in life that we
cannot control. The future does indeed look bleak.
Read a newspaper, turn on the news.

Just when you think that you've heard the worst of the
worst, somthing even more appalling and atrocious will
take it's place.

It is a miserable state of mind to have few things to
desire, and many things to fear.
Fear breeds depression, and as I have stated that
depression becomes contagious...

But there are so many wonderful things, too.

Our economy keeps booming, people in Silicon Valley keep on discovering wonderful things, and even the Iraq war is far, far less devastating than earlier wars.

Why are we such bitter complainers, when previous generations have faced far worse things, like the Depression, World War II, etc?

D, you have brought up things that in the minds eye
should be uplifting and a positive that would lift
your spirit and make you believe that there is light
at the end of the tunnel, but....

Why would a teenage girl be concerned about a booming
economy when she is forced to live on the streets,
because she cannot take the daily beatings and abuse
of an alcoholic father at home.

Why would a teenage boy be concerned about the modern marvals of todays technology when his mother deems it
more important to spent more time and effort with a
crack pipe than the needs of her son.

"sorry little Bobby, I no you would like a new pair of
tennis shoes, to keep in style with your friends, sorry
my son, I have the money, but mamma needs her dope for
the day." Previous generations are not todays.

It has become a teenage wasteland, fueled by abandonment,
cast to the side of the curb. Society's remedy " Take a
few Xanax and you'll feel better in the morning."

Bullshit, theres and old saying, " Don't go pissin down
my back, and then tell me it's raining. Amen an Amen...

those things are all terrible things, but it seems to me they happened just as often in other times.

What makes today's times so sour and pessimistic as compared to those that came before?
