Of course this is not because of trendy desires for healthier food.
It's because the farmers can't afford grain for them, and so they have to scratch out their own meals.

I tried fresh chicken once in the Philippines and it was excellent.
However, chicken, like food served in the Philippines in general, is extremely variable in quality. It can go from superb to tough and icky.
One strange thing is that the quality of food doesn't have much of a relationship to price. You can go to a very expensive place and they will have a beautiful view overlooking the harbor but still serve awful food.
